1918 Boston Red Sox Huge Photograph from Fenway Park. Even a Yankees fan would have to tip his navy "NY" cap to this remarkable relic, so steeped in Red Sox tradition that you can almost smell the salt air wafting in from Boston Harbor. Don't let the 2004 and 2007 successes distract you--this 1918 edition is still the definitive Boston Red Sox World Championship team, and the baby-faced Bambino standing fourth from left appears poised to unleash his curse upon an unsuspecting New England populace. Joining Bill Buckner in Red Sox infamy is Harry Frazee standing at far left, the man whose theatrical aspirations set the stage for almost nine decades of suffering.

At lower right you'll find the attribution to Carl Horner, the most noteworthy and collectible photographer of the Dead Ball Era whose works are reproduced upon dozens of early tobacco cards including the fabled Honus Wagner T206. So with the subject and the creator each representing the pinnacle of desirability, it only makes sense that the geography of the photo's derivation continues in the trend. The 21x27" image, mounted to a heavy cardboard backing, kept hope alive through a Biblical plague of heartbreaking near misses as it hung on a wall at Fenway with the hopes of inspiring a return to the glory years. The wear and tear expected of public display is kept to a minimum though, with some minor staining and scattered small abrasions doing nothing to diminish the thunderous aesthetics. The photo's production clearly dates to the prewar period, likely within a short period of time after the 1918 Series. Unquestionably one of the most impressive and important Red Sox display pieces to surface on the hobby's auction block in recent memory.
