1917 Hilldale Club Negro League Champions Pennant. Born as a boys' team out of the Hilldale Athletic Club, which was founded Negro League marketer Ed Bolden - the Philadelphia club ascended to the professional ranks come 1916. Behind veterans Spot Poles - whose speed was compared to that of Cool Papa Bell and Ty Cobb - and Bill Pettus the Hilldale Club worked to a record of 23-15-1 and a championship. For post-season exhibitions against Major League clubs and All-Star teams the "Darby Daisies" added elite talents such as Dick Lundy, and Hall of Famers Louis Santop and Smokey Joe Williams.

Behind Bolden, the club became a charter member of the Eastern Colored League in 1923 - winning the first three pennants and appearing in the first two Colored World Series', falling to the Kansas City Monarchs in 1924 and getting revenge in '25. In the following season the club would feature stars such as Biz Mackey, Judy Johnson, Martin Dihigo, and Oscar Charleston.

The offered pennant, which measures, 10.5x29.5", proclaims Hilldale as "Champions 1917" with the depiction of a ballplayer to the left. A Philadelphia manufacturers tag appears on the reverse. Though this felt novelty exhibits heavier wear with soiling and fading of the fabric and some chipping in the graphics, you will be hard pressed to find a Negro League pennant of a previous vintage.
