Description
1912 Christy Mathewson Life Mask by Robert Baruch. Extraordinary display piece hung for years in Matty's favorite hotel, then spent a number of years in the personal collection of renowned hobby pioneer Barry Halper. The practice of producing masks from the faces of living or deceased celebrities--life masks and death masks--has fallen out of favor in the past century, but such examples exist for a wide array of 20th century and earlier historical figures from Napoleon to Abraham Lincoln to John Dillinger. This life mask was cast by artisan Robert Baruch during a season that saw Big Six lead his New York Giants to the National League pennant with a 23-12 record and a puny 2.12 ERA.To be clear, this is no mere sculpture, but rather a casting made from Mathewson's actual face, thus exactly life size. The medium is glazed plaster, the highly realistic visage emerging from an oval approximately 16x15" in size. Verso is etched with the name of the subject and artist, and the "1912" vintage. A few small chips cause little visual distraction, as our catalog imagery should convey. Unquestionably one of the most unusual and compelling Mathewson relics we've presented.
