    Description

1911 Philadelphia Athletics Medallion. In the Philadelphia Athletics' first dynastic run, Mack's Men appeared in four World Series in five years, winning three and earning Connie the moniker "The Tall Tactician."

Featuring the "$100,000" infield of McInnis, Collins, Barry and Baker, along with a vaunted pitching staff with names like Plank, Bender, Coombs and Morgan, the A's dominated baseball like few teams have before or since.

Everything connected with Mack's first dynasty is highly coveted by collectors, primarily due to rarity and aesthetic beauty.

The only know exemplar that we have ever seen offered for public sale, the metal medallion on offer here measures 2" in diameter and features a bronze-toned, diecut, walking elephant perched atop a baseball and two crossed bat on the front surrounded by "American Base Ball Club Of Philadelphia" on blue enamel. Meanwhile, the silver-toned verso is engraved "Presented To The Philadelphia Athletics." The piece as a whole is in nice condition considering its age, with the exception some relatively minor chipping to a small portion of the blue enamel.

While this lot bears no date or player affiliation, we are confident that it dates from the 1911 championship season as its design is virtually identical to the A's 1911 World Series press pin and 1911 pendant which Heritage previously sold for $108,000 and $11,400, respectively. The occasion for its issuance was perhaps as a keepsake produced for a celebratory dinner. Further research by a dedicated researched may in fact uncover more details on the origins of this most intriguing specimen.
