1911 Boston Red Sox Stock Certificate Owned by James McAleer. He got his start with Cy Young's Cleveland Spiders and played in the first game ever contested by the American League team now known as the Cleveland Indians. After stints as manager of the St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators, McAleer came to Boston in 1911, becoming half-owner in 1912. Here we find what may be his earliest foray into team ownership, a certificate for 100 shares of stock in the "Boston American League Base-Ball Club" dated the "Fifteenth day of September 1911."

While any stock certificate dating to baseball's Dead Ball Era is worthy of collecting envy, this specimen's connection to McAleer makes it particularly noteworthy. His autograph appears on verso while his co-owner John Taylor's appears on front, adding further luster to this important document. Two vertical storage fold lines appear but otherwise the certificate exhibits no noteworthy condition issues. Dimensions are 9x11.5". McAleer's signature rates 9/10; Taylor's is 6/10.
