Description

1911 Albert Spalding Signed Book to Founder of Boston Red Stockings. Essential early text from one of the key pioneers of our National Pastime, "America's National Game" traces the sport from its birth, to its growth in the military camps of the American Civil War, to the first professional teams, and forward through the first decade of the twentieth century. Every serious baseball historian has read it, and every collector of rare baseball books owns a copy, or desires one.

Those copies signed by the author are particularly coveted, of course, and this is no "ordinary" example thereof. Spalding's 9/10 black fountain pen ink assigns the volume, "To my old friend Ivers W. Adams with my compliments, A.G. Spalding, New York, Oct. 13, 1911." Adams is notheworthy in early baseball history as the founder of Boston's first professional baseball team, the Boston Red Stockings, effectively the relocated Cincinnati franchise that stands as the first pro team ever. It's an extraordinary link between two seminal figures of the sport.

The binding is slightly loose but not to any problematic degree, and not in any way diminishing the fine aesthetics. A special example. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
