Direct from the Bresnahan family with their letter of provenance!

1910's Roger Bresnahan Game Used Catcher's Mitt. One of the most versatile players of the early professional game, Roger Bresnahan appeared at all nine positions during his Major League career but is best remembered as one of the elite catchers of the Dead Ball Era. Few players have been more influential in revolutionizing the sport from the inside, with credit for the popularization of protective gear, from shin guards to the first batting helmet, widely assigned to Bresnahan by baseball historians.

Presented is the lone memento from the defensive half of Bresnahan's Hall of Fame career ever to surface in the collecting community, a professional model "Spalding" catcher's glove dating to the closing seasons of the legend's Major League career, and possibly his short stint as owner and catcher of the Toledo Mud Hens that concluded his playing days. Leading glove expert Joe Phillips' lengthy letter of examination notes that Spalding debuted the model in 1912, bearing the proper red manufacturer's label on the back of the index finger, and "Roger Bresnahan" handwritten on the thumb in vintage ink. Buckled wrist strap and all lacing that spans the thirty and a half inch (30.5") perimeter of the mitt are present and undamaged. Moderate game wear is evident.

The appearance of Dead Ball Era gloves from noteworthy players is an exceedingly rare occurrence in the collecting community, and the ironclad provenance of this particular model sets it apart from even that thinnest of populations. The former ownership by arguably the most influential catcher in the history of the sport is likewise an enormous boon for the advanced collector. Letter of provenance from the Bresnahan family. LOA from Joe Phillips.
