Description

1909 Pittsburgh Pirates World Championship Pin Presented to Paddy O'Connor. Before you start questioning our eyesight or sanity, allow us to stipulate that we are well aware this shiny little bauble is a ring now, but that's not how it began life. One need only refer to past sales--Hall of Fame manager Fred Clarke's pin, for instance--to see that this is indeed the one and only Championship award presented to members of Honus Wagner's Pirates squad for their defeat of Ty Cobb's Detroit Tigers. But, in a most romantic gesture from the Bucs' back-up catcher, O'Connor commissioned a jeweler to transform his pin into the delicate lady's ring you see before you, a gift for his wife. The design is well worn but still very clearly announces its intention of identifying its owner as "World's Champions 1909." A genuine diamond rests at center. The simple, delicate ring measures to size six. Though slightly altered from its original state, the trinket's status as one of the very earliest World Series awards remains compelling and unaffected. True Pirates treasure, to be sure.

    The Paddy O'Connor Collection.

This is one of sixteen lots deriving from the personal collection of Paddy O'Connor, a native of County Kerry, Ireland who quickly discovered an aptitude for our National Pastime upon his immigration to the States. O'Connor's baseball career included brief terms in the American, National and Federal Leagues, and most notably membership with the World Championship 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates. The material offered here is consigned directly by the O'Connor family.
