Description

1909 Forbes Field (Pittsburgh Pirates) Grand Opening Invitation & Pass. "Largest assemblage ever gathered in any ball park anywhere enjoys ideal weather conditions," reported The Pittsburg Press, which wrote glowingly of the newest and grandest structure ever to play host to our National Pastime upon its June 30, 1909 grand opening. The stadium would serve as home for the Pirates for over six decades to come, hosting some of the most glorious moments in Steeltown sports history, from a World Championship in its debut season to another in 1960 that supplied the game with one of its most memorable events, Bill Mazeroski's Game Seven walk-off blast.

This is the first time we've encountered seminal documents like these, an artfully designed invitation to the Grand Opening ceremonies and the contest between the Bucs and Cubs to follow, and the pass to be presented at the gate for free admission. Each exceedingly rare artifact exhibits only minimal toning to suggest over a century of storage, a pin hole at upper left corner of the former likely inflicted upon issue. Rarity and firsts are two factors that are sure to fuel value and collectibility in our hobby, and this offers both in abundance. Invitation measures 6.5x8.5". Pass measures 3.5x5.5".
