Description

1908 Chicago Cubs World Champions Pennant. Any Chicago Cubs fan worth his salt can tell you the significance of the year 1908, as it pertains to the ball club. It was the last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. In fact, it is the longest dry spell in the history of professional American team sports...and counting.

That Cubs team featured the famed double play combination of Tinkers to Evers to Chance, along with ace hurlers Mordecai Brown and Ed Reulbach. On offer here is a rare reminder of that ninety-nine-win season and world title so long ago. Green and black felt pennant reads "1908 National League World's Champions Cubs." This is the first example of this pennant we have ever offered for sale. In addition to its rarity and significance, it can also be said that this pennant is in exceptional condition considering its 108-year-old vintage. The only discernible defects are what appear to be faint tack holes in two of the corners. Also, the remaining corner of the pennant is missing a very small piece of felt (1/4x1/8") and that area is detached from the fabric border to which it was originally affixed.

The pennant (18x7") was originally the property of the consignor's great grandparents who had a farm in Bainbridge, Michigan that was near to Lake Michigan and Chicago. The consignor discovered the pennant in the rafters of the farm's barn in 1978, along with other turn-of-the-century items, and has kept it in his possession ever since. Letter of provenance form the consignor.
