1903 New York Highlanders/Yankees Stock Certificates Lot of 2 with Ticket Stub. The most famous team in baseball started with humble beginnings just after the turn of the 20th century. In 1901, the Baltimore Orioles became one of eight American League charter franchises, and in 1903 moved to become the New York Highlanders. They played under that name until adopting the Yankees nickname in 1913. Offered here are three pieces of rare memorabilia from those earliest days. First up is a canceled certificate dated 1903 for 993 shares, on certificate #4, to James McNally. The certificate has been badly cut apart, probably as part of the cancellation process but offers enough information to date this to the very start of the Highlanders. Also included is a similar, but unissued, certificate providing a magnificent starting point for a framed display. The tiniest corner creases are all that prevent this from earning a near mint or higher grade. Finally, another rarity included is a ticket stub from the Highlanders, noted by the "Greater New York Base Ball Club of the American League" nomenclature on the front. It is difficult to date which year this stub is from, but given it's found location with the stock certificates, it is likely from the first 1903 season. Stub rates good due to a hidden tear, but presents far better.
