1900 Charles Comiskey Jr. & Ban Johnson Signed Contract to Lease Land for Construction of South Side Park (III). It could be the earliest article of Chicago White Sox memorabilia that exists, dating to March of the year 1900. It's an agreement to lease the property where the team would play its first games, a team identified as the "American League Base Ball Club of Chicago" a year before that League made the transition from minor to Major League certification. Historians are well aware that it was Charles Comiskey and Ban Johnson who refashioned (and renamed) the Western League they purchased together in 1892 into a legitimate competitor for the entrenched National League, and this is a seminal artifact from that campaign. The White Sox (or White Stockings, as they were known at the time) would play at this third incarnation of South Side Park for the first ten years of their existence, capturing the American League pennant in this first season.The typed three-page document on legal-sized paper exhibits water-staining and some light separation at the various fold lines, but the signatures on the third page--three from Charles A. Comiskey and one from Ban Johnson and the owners of the property in question. An imprinted corporate seal of the ballclub appears on this last page as well. The Comiskey Collection
It's a name that remains synonymous with Chicago White Sox baseball, and one properly immortalized in Cooperstown bronze. The collection that appears in the lots that follow spans six decades of the team's history, beginning with what may be the earliest ChiSox document in private hands, and continuing on to feature a wide assortment of material from sons J. Louis and Charles A. Comiskey II, who carried on the ownership of the club following their father's passing. Many of the key moments in team history are memorialized, from the team's first World Series appearance in 1906, to the famous World Tour of 1913-14, to the club's eventual sale to another Hall of Fame executive, Bill Veeck, in 1959. All items were stored for decades in the attic of Charles Junior's home before they were acquired by our consignor, and they make their auction debut here.
