Description

1896 "The Sunday Journal" Poster Featuring John Montgomery Ward. Our last Platinum Night auction featured a glorious example of the ultra-rare Burke Ale advertising poster featuring the 19th century Hall of Fame pairing of Cap Anson and Buck Ewing, that lot commanding a winning bid of $78,000. As tremendously scarce as that Burke representation is, the offered poster is rarer still--in fact, it's only the second example we've encountered in any forum or database.

The stunning relic dates to just seven years after the Burke and likewise draws upon the star power of our national pastime to promote its wares--in this case, the May 17, 1896 edition of "The Sunday Journal" newspaper. The batsman who commands the center of the poster is clearly John Montgomery Ward, whose "straight out of central casting" appearance--handlebar mustache, pillbox cap, necktie and thick-handled bat--serves as a spellbinding tribute to the early professional game.

From any reasonable viewing distance, the 21x15" poster presents without distraction, but close inspection reveals minor points of restoration, and a small are of wear at left shin. Certainly no issue even begins to undermine the extraordinary eye appeal. The museum-quality 32x26.5" framing further elevates the aesthetics. Poster is professionally linen-backed. Provenance: Eric C. Caren Collection.
