1895 Baltimore Orioles Photographic Paperweight. Just the second example to surface in the collecting hobby, this rare and gorgeous relic is believed to have been manufactured solely for members of the pennant-winning squad, as the earlier auction offering derived from the family of a player on the team. While the history of this particular specimen has been lost to the passing twelve decades, the marvelous aesthetics haven't been dulled in the slightest by many years since Ned Hanlon's scrappy club celebrated its second of three consecutive Temple Cup Championships.

The Hall of Fame manager is pictured at the top of the center column of the sixteen photographic vignettes that reside beneath the glass dome of the paperweight, his image slightly larger than the rest of the squad that includes fellow future Cooperstown inductees "Wee Willie" Keeler, Hughie Jennings, John McGraw, Joe Kelley and Wilbert Robinson. Each player image is identified in neat text, with the full club identified as "Baltimore B.B.C. 1895."

A hinged metal easel back enhances the displayability of the weighty relic, which measures three inches in diameter. Short of minor toning of the backing paper that holds the photo in place, the piece is efffectively unchanged from its date of issue. A remarkable find for the challenging field of nineteenth century baseball collecting.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
