Description

1894 Temple Cup Figural Stickpin. Representing the ultimate prize for serious collectors of 19th century baseball artifacts is any piece related to the short-lived predecessor to the World Series, the Temple Cup. Named after Pittsburgh team owner William Temple, the prize was awarded to the winner of a seven-game playoff between the top two teams in the National League. Several factors conspire in the extreme scarcity of such pieces, most notably the passing of almost eleven decades since the series' demise in 1897. But player apathy and lackluster support from the fans clearly played a part as well, with terrible attendance at the park for Temple Cup games the main cause of the discontinuation. Well, if they didn't care about the Temple Cup back then, collectors surely do today, so we're pleased to present one of only two figural stickpins from the event known to exist. Dating from a meeting of the Baltimore Orioles (featuring Hall of Famers Ned Hanlon, Dan Brouthers, Wilbert Robinson, John McGraw, Joe Kelley and Wee Willie Keeler) and the New York Giants (with Hall of Famers Monte Ward and Amos Rusie), this pin was proudly worn by a fan of the latter, as it boldly boasts, "1894, It's Ours, The Temple Cup" in text that frames the image of a tiny ballplayer. The figural area of the pin, the Temple Cup in miniature, measures an inch tall by one-half inch wide, and remains in tarnished but otherwise terrific condition. Any 19th century baseball piece of this aesthetic quality would carry significant value in the collecting marketplace, but the offered pin's connection to the prestigious Temple Cup puts it quite squarely in a class of its own.
