The Hall of Famer's team marks his milestone...

1893 Sam Thompson 1,000th Career Hit Presentational Trophy Bat from the Philadelphia Quakers.
No player in history has matched the run-producing abilities of Sam Thompson, whose career run batted in to games played ratio of .923 (1,305 RBI's in 1,410 games) remains the Major League record over eleven decades after his retirement. The 1974 posthumous Hall of Fame inductee stood as number two in career home runs (126) as the nineteenth century drew to a close, second only to fellow Cooperstown immortal Roger Connor (138). Despite Thompson's enormous contributions to the early professional game, he remains absent from nearly all private memorabilia collections today, with the entirety of non-card auction offerings calculable on a single hand.

Presented is the most significant artifact from the career of Sam Thompson ever to tempt a bidding audience, a trophy bat (17.5" in length) presented to him by his team to commemorate the occasion of his 1,000th base hit. An engraved plate affixed to the barrel of the bat, set into a carved oval depression, reads as follows (with no corrections to text): "To Sam Thompson For Your One Thousanth Hit's, 1893, From The Philadelphia Quakers."

We suspect that the imperfect record-keeping of the period accounts for the late presentation of the trophy, as Thompson would reach that milestone early in the 1892 season. The bat is coated in ancient black paint and housed within a custom hinged wooden presentation case with a black felt and red silk interior and an engraved plaque on the lid reading, "Sam Thompson." General handling and storage wear is evident, but there are no condition flaws of concern. A thrilling opportunity for the advanced 19th century collector.
