Description

1893 Albert Spalding Signed Lease. The sporting goods magnate and future Hall of Famer enters into a lease with William E. Strong, whose wife is the subject of the insurance forms likewise presented within this auction. The ornately penned script and turn-of-the-century legalese make it difficult for a layman to discern the nature of the agreement, but we do understand the flawless "Albert G. Spalding" signature beside the first orange star at the bottom of the document. The 9x14" document exhibits just the lightest, inconsequential toning and wear at the paper edges, but nothing that minimizes the tremendous visual and historical appeal in the slightest. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.

This is one of four lots deriving from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Strong, who had the good fortune of entering into a real estate transaction with one of the most historically significant pioneers of the sport of baseball. As a founding father of the National League, organizer of the first great Baseball World Tour in 1888-89, and creator of a brand of sporting goods which has made Spalding a household name, few figures are owed as large a debt of gratitude for the growth of our American Pastime as the man whose autographs turn the following lots into treasures of history.
