1889 E.R. Williams Complete Set (52) with Original Box and Playing Equipment. "Easily played, attractive, exciting, every play in the field game shown." These words, printed on the cover box for Egerton R. Williams' Popular In-Door Base-Ball Game, only hint at the visual delights to be found in the set's extraordinary deck of fifty-two cards. All of the 2.5x3.5" playing cards are included in the game, which has also retained its original box, directions, score cards and cardboard playing pieces. Baseball symbols garnish their designs, and the legend, "Copyright 1889 - By E.R. Williams," is seen at the cards' center.

Nineteen cards each depict a pair of the period's National League or American Association star players, including ten Hall of Famers. The remainder of the card fronts portray crossed bats, along with moves for play, and all have deep green reverses decorated by an at-the-ready batting figure.

The beautiful cards appear to have been handled in a few games over a century ago and then stored. The game's fascinating roster of player subjects includes: Cap Anson/Buck Ewing (VG-EX), Dan Brouthers/Arlie Latham (EX), Charles Buffinton/Parisian Bob Carruthers (VG-EX), Hick Carpenter/Cliff Carroll (VG-EX), Charles Comiskey/Roger Connor (EX), Pop Corkhill/Jim Fogarty (EX), John Clarkson/Tim Keefe (EX), Jerry Denny/Silent Mike Tiernan (G), Dave Foutz/King Kelly (G), Pud Galvin/Dave Orr (EX), Pebbly Jack Glasscock/Foghorn Tucker (EX), Mike Griffin/Ed McKean (EX), Dummy Hoy/Long John Reilly (VG-EX), Arthur Irwin/Ned Williamson (VG-EX), Silver King/John Tener (VG-EX), Al Myers/Cub Stricker (G), Fred Pfeffer/Chicken Wolf (VG-EX), Toad Ramsey/Gus Weyhing (G), and Monte Ward/Curt Welch (EX).

The 3x5x1.25" box has protected its valuable contents for more than a century. The box presents Good with one tear in the top panel plus one corner split; the game board is in good condition with inner surface split along the fold (note that this is the only game board known to exist). Two score cards remain, one used. Also found with this game is a "Garland Stoves and Ranges" score keeper.
