    Description

1887 Spalding Umpire's Counter with 5 Balls, 4 Strikes. One of the most collectible of its type, this celluloid beauty ups the ante considerably with the extraordinarily scarce original packaging. The celluloid has toned to an amber shade over the passing century but otherwise finds no troubles of note, with the functionality of the piece still perfect. The joint rules of the National League and American Association announced the five balls/four strikes rule change in 1887 and returned to the familiar rules the following season, allowing for the precise dating. The cardboard box is a bit later than the scorer, and exhibits general handling wear and vintage tape reinforcement of the sides, but the lid still provides marvelous graphics.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
