One of the toughest autographs in the hobby, in ideal format

1887 Roger Connor Signed New York Giants Salary Receipt. The Polo Grounds stood in the northeast corner of Central Park when the 1887 New York Giants defended the turf as its home ballpark, a team bursting with 19th century legends including Monte Ward, Buck Ewing, Jim O'Rourke, Tim Keefe, Mickey Welsh and the man whose exceedingly rare autograph adorns the presented relic. Roger Connor occupied first base and served as the team's greatest offensive threat, leading the 1887 team in every power category: doubles (26), triples (22), home runs (17) and runs batted in (104). It was Connor's career home run record that Ruth would surpass in 1920, though the nineteenth century long ball artist was practically forgotten after his retirement and was buried in an unmarked grave in 1931.

The presented autograph stands as just the third representation to surface in the modern collecting hobby, the other two (which supplied the exemplars used to authenticate this specimen) deriving from the estates of Tim Keefe and Harry Chadwick. This elite rarity was located deep in the archives of the New York Giants, a receipt for an advance of ten dollars on Connor's salary. The early slugger acknowledges the payment with his autograph at lower right, rating a solid 9/10 in black fountain pen ink. The document itself, similar in size (3x7.25") and format to a personal check, exhibits a very faint vertical crease at center, another at the corner, and dried adhesive residue on reverse, but our catalog imagery should properly indicate that the piece flirts with a NRMT appearance nonetheless. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
