Description

1887 Harry Wright Handwritten & Signed Contract. Wright's contributions to the early development of our national pastime place him right alongside Cartwright and Doubleday as one of baseball's most noteworthy pioneers. He was the founder and center fielder of the the first professional ball club (the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings), invented the box scoring system, designed the standard baseball uniform and was the first to direct his defense to shift in relation to hitters' tendencies. Overstatement is nearly impossible when contextualizing the significance of Wright within baseball history at large.

Most of the Harry Wright autographs traded in the hobby today derive from his personal scorebooks, fascinating documents to be certain, but lacking the depth and breadth of the text we encounter here. In his capacity as manager of the 1887 Philadelphia Quakers of the National League, Wright authored this correspondence for delivery to his counterpart of an opposing team, manager Charlie Hackett of the International Association's Newark Little Giants. The text determines the date and location of the contest, how shares of gate proceeds will be distributed, and even how the umpire will be selected and paid. The two-page letter ends with a "Harry Wright, Mgr." signature. Hackett signals his consent to the terms with an autograph of his own.

The letter is written on two separate sheets of 5x8" lined paper, the second page missing a portion of the upper right corner, taking several words with it but remaining well clear of autographs. Ink averages a consistent 8/10. Adding intrigue to the piece, the Newark Little Giants would make baseball history just a week after this scheduled meeting with the Quakers, sending African-American pitcher George Stovey to the mound to pitch to Moses Fleetwood "Fleet" Walker in what stands in history as the first all-black battery in professional baseball.
