    Description

1884 Red Stockings Cigar Box Label. The first professional baseball team in history is celebrated here, making this one of the most important cigar labels related to our National Pastime ever to surface in the collecting hobby. As the following text reports--"Registered in the year 1874 by Nichols & MacDonald. Transferred in 1884 to Fred'k W. MacDonald. In Patent Office At Washington"--the artwork itself dates to the sixth year of the team's existence, and its fourth in Boston, but was revisited a decade later when ownership was transferred.

The gorgeous lithography is rife with period details, from the underhand pitching style to the gloveless fielders to the thick-handled bats, a love song to the earliest days of the professional game. Condition is wonderful, with no creasing, tearing or staining, only very light and consistent toning to suggest thirteen decades of life. Dimensions approximately six inches square (6x6"). A spectacular rarity for the advanced collector.
