1884 Climax Tobacco "Representatives of Professional Baseball in America" Advertising Print It's one of the most coveted 19th century display pieces in the hobby, and for good reason. Beyond the staggering rarity of the piece--fewer than a dozen changing hands in major auctions in the past two decades--the remarkable cast of characters serving as "Representatives of Professional Base Ball in America" secures that distinction. It's a who's who of the sport's pioneers, picturing the following iconic figures:

A.G. Mills, Harry Wright, N.E. Young, A.G. Spalding, Cap Anson, Joe Start, Pop Snyder, Harry Stovey, Jim Whitney, Guy Hecker, Charlie Bennett, Buck Ewing, John Morrill, Tim Keefe, Dan Brouthers and Pat Deasley.

The portrait vignettes are set atop a glorious image of a period baseball contest, complete with ring bats, gloveless fielders and spectators standing at the edges of the field of play. We note that the lowermost text of the print identifies Climax as a subsidiary of Lorillard & Company, a name familiar to collectors of early tobacco cards, most issued within a few years of this important relic. The sepia of the print has deepened with age, with a pale edge around the perimeter the result of decades in a frame (now removed).

We suspect the protection afforded by that frame is owed the credit for the remarkably fine state of preservation, with a few scattered wrinkles, and short tears at the edges, representing the worst of the paltry condition caveats. It's a gorgeous display piece in its current state, but we suspect that a simple deacidification and linen-backing would coax forth an even more commanding aesthetic. We strongly advise interested bidders to interface with our high-resolution online imagery for the best available data regarding condition. Dimensions 21x28".
