A founding franchise of the National League calls it quits after four years...
1879 Cincinnati Reds Letter of Resignation from National
League. A new Cincinnati Reds franchise would debut in 1881, so
only the most educated of baseball historians is aware that the
original iteration of the team that participated in the 1876
founding of the National League disbanded after only four seasons.
While this first edition only once finished within ten games of the
pennant pace, it did feature three Hall of Famers within its
ranks--Candy Cummings, King Kelly and Deacon White.This handwritten letter on ultra-rare team letterhead was authored by team president J. Wayne Neff and reads:
"Dear Sir, The resignation of our Association as a member of the League is hereby tendered. Please notify me of the acceptance of same at your earliest convenience, Very truly yours, J.M.W. Neff."
The lower portion of the page bears the response of National League president William Hulbert:
"As Prst I have accepted above Oct. 24. You had better notify the rest. Also notify everybody we release Frank Hankinson--one of our reserves, WAH."
The single page measures 10.5x8" and presents remarkably well for its advanced vintage, with minor toning at a couple of the fold lines, but no condition flaws of any real concern.
