Description

1879 Arthur Soden Signed Boston Red Stockings Baseball Association Stock Certificate. The Boston Red Stockings of 1879 placed second to the Providence Grays with a record of 54-30, led by pitcher Tommy Bond (43-19, 1.96 ERA) and managed by Hall of Famer Harry Wright.

The offered stock certificate measures 5.5x8.5" and was good for one share of the company for Franklin F. Roundy. The certificate has been signed by baseball pioneer and owner Arthur Soden in aged fountain pen. Soden was a Civil War veteran who was owner/president of the team, and he introduced the idea of reserving players for the following season. Soden also served temporarily as president of the National League in 1882. Eight years later, Soden would bankroll National League teams in order to emerge victorious over the upstart Players League, and he owned both the Boston and New York Giants by this time.

Certificate shows two heavy vertical folds, and staining in the lower right corner. It has been signed over to Nathaniel Hamlen on the reverse, and includes a separate receipt for the initial sale of the stock from George McNeal in 1879. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
