Description

1876 Louisville Base Ball Company Stock Certificate. Historic document dates to the very first year of the National League's existence, and hence the first year of what we now recognize as Major League Baseball. The team in question is the Louisville Grays, which finished fifth in the NL that inaugural season with a record of thirty and thirty-six. Though the team would fold after two seasons despite a much improved second place finish its sophomore term, the monumental importance of the offered certificate is in no way diminished. The certificate represents 250 shares at a cost of $100/share, an enormous sum during southern Reconstruction. The owner, John Echols, had been one of the leading voices for secession prior to the war, and served as a General in combat before becoming one of the south's most prominent railroad tycoons. His certificate exhibits only light toning at the edges and an occasional light bend, but could easily be framed to approximate a NRMT appearance.
