Description

The hobby's most coveted Civil War-era display piece

1863 Union Prisoners at Salisbury Civil War Baseball Lithograph. It's one of the earliest color representations of the sport that grew to become our National Pastime. Though the Civil War marks a particularly troubling period of American history, it was through the marching of armies that the nation was pollinated with the love for the sport, and thus any artifacts concerning Civil War baseball are particularly and properly coveted by the knowledgeable baseball historian. In this regard, the spectacular aesthetics of this large print are pure icing.

Text along the bottom border of these prints, reads"Union Prisoners at Salisbury, N.C., Drawn from Nature by Act. Major Otto Boeticcher," the artist who copyrighted the image in 1863. The detail of the artwork is truly remarkable, with dozens of prisoners and guards ranged all about the 25x42" lithograph but mainly engaged in play or spectatorship of the baseball action. This period print was lithographed in three stones (black, buff, blue) and then painstakingly hand colored. Professional conservation has nearly eliminated the effects of acidification, and expertly repaired two tears into left margin and one on right side, none longer than four inches.

The advanced age and delicate composition of these Boeticcher prints have allowed only a small handful to survive to present day, and this magnificent representation may be the finest of that endangered breed. We advise interested parties to visit our online listing for a close inspection of the piece, which will serve to illustrate that point. The beauty and importance of the relic will serve to establish it as a focal point in even the most impressive of private collections. Framed to a museum-quality 39x51".
