    Description

Mid-1970's Rod Carew Game Worn & Signed Minnesota Twins Cap with Paul Hill Provenance. UPDATE: The signature is Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA.

Game worn Rod Carew caps with strong provenance, dating from his glory days with the Minnesota Twins in the 1960's and 1970's, are virtually non-existent in the public sale records going back thirty years. One can only assume that whatever legitimate exemplars may exist are locked away in museums or private high-end collections.

The rare and desirable specimen offered here hails form the collection of Paul Hill, a Philadelphia-area based cap collector (aka "The Dean of Cap Collectors" and "The Empire Cap Collector") who amassed the premier baseball cap collection in the country over a fifty year period, from the 1940s to the 1990s. Before long, players, equipment managers, and front office personnel knew him and they would give and send him caps during and after the season. When visiting teams would come to town for their last appearance of the season, Hill could always be found meeting the opposing players at the corner of their dugout to receive their caps.

Two of Hill's trademarks included printing the player's name inside the headband as well as on a piece of white tape, which he would affix to the inner crown. The exemplar offered here contains both of those trademarks.

The midnight navy blue cap features the Twin Cities "TC" in white and red embroidery on the front with "New Era" and "7 5/8" tags on the headband and "29" in faded pen on the green under-brim. The cap shows wonderful evidence of game use, with soiling to the headband and tagging. Furthermore, the cap is signed Rod Carew on the under-brim in faded sharpie. Note: there is a very small area on the outer brim where the blue felt wore off.

It is also important to note that Carew was wearing a hat size of 7 5/8 during this period (whereas earlier and later in his career he wore a smaller size) to accommodate the larger afro he was sporting during this point in the 1970's.

In addition to his 3,000-plus hits, seven batting crowns, and .328 lifetime batting average, Carew also stole home seven times in 1969, hit for the cycle in 1970, and batted .388 in 1977, when he was named A.L. MVP. Certainly the finest Rod Carew cap ever offered at auction. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA (autograph).
