    Description

1980-82 Nolan Ryan Game Worn Houston Astros Cap. After five seasons with the Mets and eight with the Angels, Nolan Ryan quadrupled his salary and became the first player to earn one million dollars a year when he signed with the Astros in 1980.

That season, he recorded his 3,000 strikeout. In the strike-shortened 1981, he went 11-5 with 140 K's, and a league-leading 1.69 ERA, and threw his record-breaking fifth no-hitter. By the end of 1982, The Express was on the brink of surpassing Walter Johnson for the all-time strikeout record.

The home orange gamer offered here dates from that 1980-82 period and is constituted of a lightweight polyester blend, specifically designed to let cooler heads prevail in the oppressive Houston heat. The team logo on the front jumps out in midnight navy blue and white embroidery, while the inner headband displays a "New Era...Pro Model" label, a "7 1/4" size tag (matches other known exemplars), and desired evidence of discoloration from 100-mile-per-hour perspiration. A small "34" appears on the under-bill in vintage black ink which similar to other known exemplars. However, "Ryan" written in pen on the top portion of the manufacturer's tag may or may not be germane to the cap's Major League usage. A real beauty with solid wear. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
