    Description

1970's Johnny Bench Game Worn Cincinnati Reds Batting Helmet. Number sixteen on The Sporting News' list of Baseball's Greatest Players, Bench further distinguished himself as the top vote-getter at the catcher's position, topping even the great Josh Gibson for the honor. The Reds were one of the first teams to market their game-worn wares when they sold select items through the team store.

According to our consignor, that is precisely where this helmet originates from. Any paperwork backing this claim is gone though. The helmet has "Bench" Dymo labeled on the reverse. We have found multiple images with Bench wearing a helmet with a similar type of Dymo label placement. The inside leather headband is missing, but the inner crown cushioning (with "5" written in vintage black marker) is still present. Various scratches and scuffs are found on the red shell and "C" team emblem. The white decal has staining (possibly pine tar) from game action. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
