Provenance from family of The New York Times sports photographer!

1951-63 Mickey Mantle Game Worn New York Yankees Cap from The Ernie Sisto Collection, MEARS Authentic. If Mickey Mantle hadn't existed in reality, Hollywood would have needed to invent him--an affable blonde-headed Oklahoma boy with enormous natural gifts turned loose upon the City that Never Sleeps, slugging titanic homers during the day and boozing away the nights. Though the Mick nobly spent the final weeks of his life casting himself as a cautionary tale, there was nobody in America that more young boys were inspired to emulate, from the way he swung the bat to the hunch-shouldered way he trotted around the bases after connecting.

Those young Baby Boomers would become the driving force of the sports collectibles industry as they grew into adulthood, and the Mick remains the undisputed king of the post-war hobby, from his trading cards to his game used gear. Here we present a glorious representation of the latter, bearing the twin hallmarks of heavy, season-long wear and rock-solid provenance.

The battle-tested relic suggests at least a full year of action, the interior stained with sweat, the leather headband cracking but complete. Remarkably the cardboard insert of the visor remains unbroken, a rarity for decades-old caps, and the vintage number "7" remains bold in black marker underneath. The proper "Tim McAuliffe" manufacturer's label at interior headband is the tool used for MEARS' date range, and it is joined by "7 1/8" size stamping a few inches to the right, consistent with other known Mantle gamers.

The cap is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the granddaughter of Ernie Sisto, a photographer who covered the Big Apple baseball beat for The New York Times for a half century. Our May 2019 auction featured a wide array of Sisto's souvenirs from that enviable assignment, but this is arguably the crown jewel. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. Letter of provenance from granddaughter of Ernie Sisto. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
