Description

One of just two known Dickey uniform items to appear at auction!

1930-43 Bill Dickey Game Worn New York Yankees Cap, MEARS Authentic. Only Yogi Berra, who shares ownership of the number "8" jersey retired in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park, owns more New York Yankees World Championship rings than this man, who claimed eight as a player and six more as a coach and manager. In fact, it was Dickey who taught Berra the art of catching at the Big League level, making him arguably the most important Yankee ever to wear the tools of ignorance. Famed Yankee scout was such a fan of the young prospect that he assured general manager Ed Barrow, "I will quit scouting if this boy does not make good."

Presented is an exceedingly rare cap worn by Dickey during his on-field service to the Yankee cause, dating to an era of such remarkable dominance that World Championship season attribution is nearly assured by the simple laws of probability. It's not entirely clear why Dickey garments are so enormously scarce, but we can report that this is only the second playing-days uniform component of any format to reach the hobby's major auction block this century. The first was a different cap which sold in our July 2015 sale for $35,850.

It's a fine representative of that woefully endangered breed, the navy felt smoothed by moderate to heavy wear and a long chain of decades to a buttery-soft state, the perfectly malleable visor and leather interior headband free of any of the condition problems that plague contemporary examples. A green embroidered, "7 1/8 W. Dickey" is sewn directly into that leather headband beside a proper "Spalding" manufacturer's label. The experts at MEARS assure us that the embroidery style perfectly matches other known period exemplars. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
