Mickey Mantle Signed Bat. Mickey Mantle was one of the most gifted and beloved players in baseball history, a switch-hitting slugger whose combination of power, speed, and charisma made him the face of the New York Yankees during the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Oklahoma in 1931, Mantle rose from humble beginnings to become a symbol of baseball greatness and American postwar optimism.Debuting with the Yankees in 1951, Mantle succeeded Joe DiMaggio in center field and quickly lived up to the enormous expectations placed upon him. Over an 18-year career, he hit 536 home runs, won three MVP Awards (1956, 1957, 1962), and captured the Triple Crown in 1956, when he led the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs. Known for his towering blasts from both sides of the plate, Mantle's power and athleticism were unmatched-though his career was often hampered by injuries that began early and plagued him throughout.
In the postseason, Mantle shone brightest, helping lead the Yankees to seven World Series championships and setting enduring records for World Series home runs (18) and RBIs (40).
