    Description

Late 1920's John "Jocko" Conlan Game Used Sidewritten Bat. The simple block lettered "Conlan" on the barrel of the presented dark hickory Hillerich & Bradsby sent the PSA/DNA bat authenticators to the record books, searching out all Major and minor league players with this surname active during the bat's 1925-1928 labeling period. Only a single name was evident, that of John Bertand Conlan, best known to the baseball world as Hall of Fame umpire Jocko Conlan.

Of all umpires enshrined at Cooperstown, only Conlan played professional ball, even registering 128 games at the Major League level with the 1934 and 1935 Chicago White Sox. The presented bat dates to his earlier minor league days, and exhibits heavy use with multiple ball marks on the barrel and a cracked handle with remnants of grip tape remaining. Vintage grease pencil on the barrel reads "Athletic Supply 5-15-29," this sidewriting indicating Conlan's desire to have more bats made with identical dimensions. Length and weight are thirty-five inches and thirty six ounces respectively, but as the only known game used bat from this tough Hall of Famer, the appeal is immeasurable. LOA from PSA/DNA.
