Description
Circa 1939 Jimmie Foxx Game Used Bat with Foxx' Handwritten Shipping Label Affixed! One of the most indisputably provenanced Foxx bats in existence, this remarkable signature model Hillerich & Bradsby was actually returned to the Louisville, Kentucky factory by Foxx himself, whose paper shipping label and two-cent stamp remains affixed to the back of the barrel. Authenticator James Spence has confirmed that the handwriting, which addresses the bat to "Mr. Henry Morrow, c/o Hillerich & Bradsby," is that of Foxx, providing ironclad proof of ownership and use by the first man to join Babe Ruth's 500 Home Run Club. For the uninitiated, Foxx would have returned this gamer to the bat factory for the purposes of ordering duplicates, assuring that this bat had served him well, had been one of his favorites. The spectacular use visible in its punished grain is further evidence of the fact, with top experts John Taube and Dave Bushing characterizing game use as "tremendous" and "heavy" respectively. Multiple ball, stitch, cleat and bat rack marks coat the barrel, and a four-inch handle crack that ended the bat's long term of service has been professionally repaired. The length and weight of thirty-four inches and thirty-four ounces respectively match June 26, 1939 ordering records, allowing us to date the bat with a significant degree of certainty.
Leaping to the rather logical conclusion that the bat was used during the 1939 season, the tremendous use evident is little surprise--Foxx' thirty-five homers and 105 runs batted in earned him a runner-up position to Joe DiMaggio in American League MVP voting, and surely served as an inspiration to a young rookie named Ted Williams who shared his Red Sox dugout. Clearly one of the finest Foxx bats in private hands, this superb specimen merits perfect 10 ratings from the experts at both PSA/DNA and MEARS. LOA from PSA/DNA. LOA from MEARS. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (handwriting).
