Description
Circa 1928 Lewis "Hack" Wilson Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. Perhaps the most unusual looking player enshrined at Cooperstown, Wilson carried 195 pounds on his five-foot six frame, balanced on short legs and tiny size six feet. Today doctors recognize these traits as hallmarks of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, indicating that Wilson's struggles with the bottle began even before his own birth. His sad decline would likewise be precipitated by the bottle, but as Wilson gripped the presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby there was no more dangerous batter in the game. This particular model most likely dates specifically to the 1928 National League season that saw Wilson finish seventh in MVP voting while leading all Senior Circuit sluggers with thirty-one home runs. His League-leading strikeout tally further establishes him as a disciple of the Babe Ruth batting method.
In another important way these two are paired, as Wilson and Ruth were the only Major Leaguers favoring the "broom stick" handle found on this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby. Though sidewriting on this gorgeous specimen has faded beyond legibility, the fact that only these two ordered such a narrow handle effectively assures that it was Wilson himself who sent the bat to Louisville for reproduction. At just short of thirty-six inches (36") in length and just over thirty-six ounces (36 oz.) in weight, it's a perfect match to ordering records.
The bat is uncracked and exhibits outstanding use in the form of ball marks, cleat marks and checking on the back barrel which has been tacked down with vintage nails. Right barrel, as noted earlier, is lightly planed for factory sidewriting, assuring that this was one of Wilson's favorite weapons, during the period of his greatest powers. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.
