Description

1988 Tony Gwynn Silver Bat Award. For two full decades, the face of the San Diego Padres franchise was superstar outfielder Tony Gwynn, the only man in Major League Baseball's top twenty ranking for lifetime batting average whose career began after the Second World War. Only Ty Cobb has led one of the two leagues more often than Mr. Padre, and the National League batting title was fittingly named for Gwynn in 2016.

Gwynn ordered duplicate models of his eight silver bats for display purposes, and this representation is from that secondary batch, marking his third title. Despite dropping fifty-seven points from the previous season, the legendary Hall of Famer still came out on top of the Senior Circuit at .313.

It must be stressed that this is not a Silver Slugger Award, presented to the top hitters at each position in much the same fashion as Gold Gloves. Only one of these awards is issued per League annually, and, in that regard, more closely equates to the prestige of a Cy Young Award or MVP. The simple design essentially matches that of Gwynn's game bats, with the Louisville Slugger trademark and facsimile signature on the barrel. Bold block letter engraved text on the lower barrel announces, "Batting Champion 1988, National League, B.A. .313." Length is thirty-four inches (34"). Flawless condition. An elite piece of which only the finest private collections are worthy.
