    Description

1980-81 Cal Ripken Game Used Bat. Cal Ripken is one of the few baseball legends who never left his home state during a Hall of Fame career. Born in Aberdeen, Maryland, Ripken eventually played for his hometown Orioles and broke one of baseball's seemingly unmatchable records as he surpassed Lou Gehrig for consecutive games played. From Ripken's earliest of days is this Louisville Slugger model M100 bat - 35" and 34.9 ounces. Moderate use is exhibited on the uncracked hickory stick with numerous ball marks and stitch impressions on all sides as well as cleat marks on the right and back barrel.

According to the PSA/DNA Bats LOA, the GU 7.5 stick has a labeling period of 1980-81. The extensive LOA spells out Ripken's bat records with the following explanation about his early bats. Between April 2 and July 15, 1980 Ripken had four orders of bats including the M110 and M159 models. Each of the bats measures 35" and weighs between 33 to 34 ounces and is listed as having a natural finish. On Ripken's Feb. 2, 1981 bat order, the model M159 was listed twice, instead of the correct order of M110 and M159. His lengths and weights were consistent with the previous year. In March of '81, Cal again ordered M159 models with a hickory finish, and instead of the M110 model, is a reference to a P72 model. Both models have a hickory finish. According to Taube's research from the labeling period, an M110 model bat with a hickory finish does not appear on Ripken's professional bat ordering records. But the model and finish do appear separately. Taube believes the omission of the hickory finish on Ripken's M110 orders was simply a factory error. This has been seen before, namely with flame treated A99 Bicentennial bats for Johnny Bench. Bench's bat records note the A99 models with a hickory finish, not flame tempered. Examples of this in the PSA/DNA Bats database are 1B03524 and D62733. LOA from PSA/DNA GU 7.5.
