Description
1976 Thurman Munson Game Used Bicentennial Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8.5--MVP Season! Unquestionably the greatest season in the tragedy-shortened career of this Big Apple icon, the 1976 Yankees campaign began with the announcement that Munson would serve as team captain, the first man to hold that title since the departure of Lou Gehrig. With the heavy weight of expectation on his shoulders, Munson proved the wisdom of the honor bestowed upon him, batting .302 with seventeen home runs and 105 RBI's to earn the American League MVP Award while leading the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 1964.Presented is a key relic from that season for the ages, exhibiting "outstanding" use, according to the experts at PSA/DNA. We've always loved 1976 gamers for the Liberty Bell stamping celebrating our nation's bicentennial, but certainly its positioning beside the facsimile signature of the AL MVP greatly amplifies that appeal. The Hillerich & Bradsby S44 measures thirty-five inches (35") in length and weighs just over thirty-one ounces (31.3 oz.), with ball marks, cleat divots, two colors of rack streaks and a single ring of grip tape at the uncracked handle. Number "15" appears in vintage marker on the knob. The PSA/DNA letter notes that a different number appears beneath Munson's, an attribute that would typically suggest use by another player, but the experts point to the decades-old appearance of the number "15" and the typical Munson characteristics of its game use to conclude "the bat is authentic, and was game used by Munson during the referenced labeling period."
The bat is accompanied by a letter of provenance from our consignor who reports that the bat was gifted to him by Yankees outfielder Lou Piniella, a friend and business associate of his father's, as the three of them chatted at the visitors' dugout of Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1976. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.5. Letter of provenance from consignor.
