    Description

A key piston from the Big Red Machine

1976 Johnny Bench Game Used Bicentennial Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10. Number sixteen on The Sporting News' list of Baseball's Greatest Players, Bench further distinguished himself as the top vote-getter at the catcher's position, topping even the great Josh Gibson for the honor. Presented is one of the most appealing Louisville Sluggers ever issued to the Hall of Fame backstop, dating to the second consecutive World Championship season for the Big Red Machine. Collectors swoon over the special bicentennial logo on all bats from the 1976 season, but this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby B278 provides much more to love.

Battling back from injury during this memorable Bicentennial season, Bench caught fire in the postseason, batting .333 to take the National League flag from the Philadelphia Phillies, before one of the best World Series performances ever rendered, a .533 average with two home runs to help sweep the mighty New York Yankees. After the successful World Championship defense was completed, a journalist asked Reds manager Sparky Anderson to compare the Yankees catcher Thurman Munson to his own. Anderson demurred. "You don't compare anyone to Johnny Bench," he explained. "You don't want to embarrass anybody."

The presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby B278 exhibits outstanding use with a constellation of ball marks and stitch impressions adorning its battered barrel. Dark pine tar coats the handle, which is lightly cracked and professionally repaired. The beloved Liberty Bell emblem clearly asserts the special vintage on the barrel, and a red number "5" on the knob recalls that long-since retired jersey.

Length of thirty-five and a half inches (35.5") and weight of thirty-two ounces (32 oz.) perfectly match factory ordering records, the final determinant in leading bat expert John Taube's highest assessment. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 10.
