1975 Thurman Munson Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10. While the beloved Yankee catcher would earn his American League MVP Award the following season, historians are quick to point to 1975 as Munson's breakout campaign. The burly backstop's 102 runs batted in was thirty better than his next closest teammate, marking the first of three consecutive seasons that Munson would reach triple digits. His .318 average was more than a fifty-point jump over his previous season's production. Add to these figures a third consecutive Gold Glove nod, and it's no wonder why the Yankees named Munson the first team captain since Lou Gehrig at the start of the subsequent 1976 season.Even beyond the tri-state area, Munson had earned legions of young fans, one of whom had the good fortune to serve as bat boy for visitors to Royals Stadium in Kansas City. His notarized letter of provenance is excerpted below:
"I sat in the dugout with him during batting practice as he came out with 3 of his bats. He sat next to me and wrote his number 15 on the knob and cup of the bat. He instructed me to keep 2 separate and away from the bat rack and to go get one of them and bring it to him if he should happen to break one. Sure enough, in his first at bat, he fouled a ball down the left field line and cracked this bat. I retrieved one of the two that we kept separate and brought it to him at the plate. 'Told you...you always have to be prepared,' he said. I brought this bat back to the dugout and placed it outside of the rack. At the end of the game, I asked him if it was okay for me to keep it. 'It's yours,' he said."
The signature model Hillerich & Bradsby S44 is exactly as described, with number "15" written in marker on knob and cupped barrel end. The handle crack has been professionally repaired, well camouflaged beneath a moderate coating of pine tar. Ball marks and stitch impressions coat the barrel, with cleat divots pocking the surface. Length is just short of thirty-five inches (34.75"), weight thirty-two ounces (32 oz.). In every regard, an elite example of a highly coveted rarity. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 10.
