Heading toward 3,000 hits, and tragedy...

1969-72 Roberto Clemente Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10. It was the great George Sisler who inspired Clemente to go big, theorizing that a heftier bat would slow down a swing that was too often beating the ball to the plate and pulling it foul. The tweak worked like a charm, and the Puerto Rican superstar would forever after wield one of the largest weapons in the game, lumber that would make even the great Bambino proud.

This thirty-six inch (36"), thirty-nine ounce (38.8 oz.) monster is the signature model Hillerich & Bradsby U1 format that blazed the final miles of Clemente's heroic trail to 3,000, one of the finest examples to emerge from those final four seasons of a Hall of Fame career. The experts at PSA/DNA assess game use as "excellent," referencing ball marks, stitch impressions, left barrel scoring and light pine tar on the uncracked handle. Number "21" is boldly applied to the knob in vintage black marker.

Though Clemente battled injury and age during these last seasons of his career and life, he remained every bit the superstar he had been in his youth, averaging a scalding .339 over that span, and forty-five extra base hits per season. He remained a top twenty finisher in National League MVP voting each year, and was properly honored--through special dispensation--with Hall of Fame induction within months of his tragic passing. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 10.
