1967 Eddie Mathews Home Run #494 Game Used Bat. "I've only known three or four perfect swings in my time," Ty Cobb once told a reporter when questioned about Mathews. "This lad has one of them." It was a swing that would carry the superstar slugger all the way to Cooperstown and make him the sixth member of the illustrious 500 Home Run Club. Mathews closed to within half a dozen long balls of that historic plateau with the assistance of this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby K44, which launched his first homer of the 1967 season. The home run was likewise Mathews' first as a Houston Astro, and his last of many launched at Cincinnati's Crosley Field, facts noted by the inscription neatly penned on the barrel, and certified by Mathews' 10/10 signature in the same blue sharpie ink below.Use is characterized as "excellent" by top expert John Taube, who attests that the bat's thirty-six inch length and thirty-six ounce weight match factory ordering records for Mathews' K44's. He also notes that the original finish has been sanded clean, most likely in the attempt to repair the five-inch handle crack that ended the bat's service, and to smooth the back barrel checking. Mathews' jersey number "11" appears in vintage marker on the knob. Noting the terrific use, fantastic provenance and perfect match to factory ordering records, Taube has assigned the bat a perfect rating of GU 10. LOA from PSA/DNA.
