Description

1967-68 Johnny Bench Game Used & Signed Rookie Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. The spark plug that fired the pistons of the Big Red Machine, Johnny Bench motored his way to Cooperstown along a highway that included stops at two World Series championships, two National League MVP's, ten Gold Gloves, fourteen All-Star appearances and a 1968 Rookie of the Year Award that the offered Adirondack 220A helped to claim. It was produced in 1967, according to the experts at PSA/DNA, who point to the thin red ring at upper handle and the particular format of center branding to make that determination, but an included letter of provenance tells the story of a family outing to a 1968 Philadelphia Phillies home game in which a promising young catcher on the visiting team cracked his bat and gifted it to an eight-year old boy seated near the Reds dugout. Based upon the family history, the most likely derivation was a Cincy road stand at Connie Mack Stadium between May 31st and June 2nd.

It's clear from the spectacular game use that the bat's term of service to its young owner likely stretched back quite some distance before the cracked handle ended its utility, and that crack has since been professionally repaired. It appears that the crack was secured by tape for a number of years, leaving behind the imprint of its coil atop the original pine tar application. Barrel is coated in ball marks and stitch impressions. Number "5" is written in vintage black marker on knob. Length is thirty-five and a half inches (35.5"), weight thirty-two and a half ounces (32.4 oz.). Blue sharpie signature on barrel is 10/10, with a "68 ROY" notation for added allure. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9. Letter of provenance from family of original recipient. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
