Description

1966 Mickey Mantle Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. One of the finest examples of late-career Mantle lumber ever to reach the auction block, this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby W215 earns every point of its lofty rating from the leading bat authentication service. Provenance, documentation in factory records and tremendous game use converge to establish the near-perfect assessment.

Expert John Taube notes that half a dozen W215's were ordered by Mantle on May 6, and another six on May 10th, with the length of thirty-five inches (35") and weight of thirty-four ounces (now 32.8 oz.) that match the example presented here. It's interesting to note that the W215 is Ted Williams' personal format, linking two of the greatest stars of the mid-twentieth century. Heavy use is evident in deeply embedded stitch marks coat which coat both sides of the barrel in accordance with Mantle's switch-hitting style, and the light pine tar on the handle is likewise an ideal Mantle trait. Red and blue bat rack streaks are noted as well. The handle remains uncracked despite the significant trauma suffered in the hands of the pinstriped slugger.

Taube's letter references a letter of provenance from a Cleveland Indians bat boy who received the bat from Mantle in 1966, but, sadly, that letter has been lost and will not be included. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.
