1965 Roberto Clemente Spring Training Game Used & Signed Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. The heroic Hall of Fame outfielder claimed four National League batting titles during his eighteen seasons of Pirates service, going back-to-back in the 1964 and 1965 seasons to establish the high-water mark of his prime. This special lumber finds Clemente at the center of that era of elite achievement, in spring training of 1965. The story is detailed in a lengthy letter of provenance from the bat's second owner, who recalls a late March visit to Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg, Florida where Pittsburgh was facing the St. Louis Cardinals. After the game, the author of the letter spotted Cardinals manager Red Schoendienst walking from the field to the clubhouse with a cracked bat in his hand, about to dump it into a trash can. Noticing the child eyeing the bat, Schoendienst asked if the youngster would like to have it. The answer, of course, was yes.The engraved name on the barrel, and the number "21" in marker on the knob, sent the boy looking for Clemente to acquire an autograph, and his efforts proved successful. The autograph survives in 8/10 ballpoint ink on a barrel packed with ball marks and stitch impressions, game use that expert John Taube characterizes as "excellent."
The bat has since been professionally repaired, securing a handle crack and removing a handwritten notation from the boy. The faint residue of clear tape appears at the autograph, as the boy had taped over the signature in an effort to protect it. A dent at the upper barrel causes little distraction, and may or may not have been inflicted by Clemente. Length is thirty-six inches (36"), weight thirty-six ounces (36.2 oz.). LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9. Letter of provenance from original recipient. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
