1964 Whitey Ford World Series Game Used Bat, MEARS A10. Eight times during his Hall of Fame career it was Whitey Ford who took starting pitcher honors for World Series Game One, the last of which came in the 1964 Fall Classic when the presented bat saw action. Educated bat collectors are well aware that pitchers' bats are the toughest of them all, little surprise due to the relative dearth of plate appearances for the position. But the lumber offered here ratchets up the appeal with its October vintage, particularly given the fact that The Chairman of the Board holds to this day the record for World Series victories at ten, and for consecutive scoreless innings at 33 2/3. In other words, Reggie Jackson's nickname would be just as suitable for Ford as is Frank Sinatra's.A perfect grade of A10 from MEARS is little surprise when we begin to examine the historic Hillerich & Bradsby K55 issued for Ford's final Series. A perfect match to October 5, 1964 factory records with its thirty-four inches of length and thirty-three ounces of weight, the bat provides a boldly block-lettered "1964-World Series, Ford, New York Yankees" on the barrel, joined by a 10/10 inscription from the superstar southpaw reading "Ed 'Whitey' Ford, 1961 Cy Young, 1974 H. of Fame." The blonde ash exhibits appropriately light use for Ford's three Series plate appearances, with deeply imbedded ball marks on the barrel, likely caused in part by Ford's RBI single in the top of the second inning of Game One. No cracks.
The full five points for factory record match and full three for appropriate use take us to eight, with the final two added for first-person provenance. The bat was originally consigned to auction by Ford himself when his personal collection was sold in July 2008. LOA from MEARS, Grade A10. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph).
