Rajah comes back strong to claim final Yankees pennant of the Mantle years

1964 Roger Maris Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9.5. Injuries limited the reigning Home Run King's play to just ninety games in 1963, and he was scratched from Fall Classic action in Game Two after just five plate appearances, so Yankee rooters looked on with no small amount of concern as Maris took to the field for the 1964 season. Though he'd never again mount a campaign like his thoroughly illogical 1961 masterpiece, the hard-slugging outfielder would more than carry his weight the American League Championship season during which the provided Hillerich & Bradsby signature model K90 saw action, batting .281 in 141 games of work with twenty-six home runs.

The lumber narrowly misses expert John Taube's highest possible assessment, but he is generous with his praise, assessing game use as "outstanding" as he directs our attention to a thick constellation of ball marks, deep stitch impressions, cleat marks, rack streaks and heavy pine tar on the very lightly cracked handle. Length of thirty-five inches (35") and weight of thirty-three ounces (33 oz.) perfectly match factory ordering records.

Any game used Yankees relic from the 1964 season carries a special, somewhat melancholy significance. Since Babe Ruth helped claim the first American League pennant for the team in 1921, the Yankees had never surrendered it for longer than a three-season span. Though the club would again have its terms of glory in the late 1970's and at the turn of the millennium, the changing landscape of the sport would ultimately condemn any hope of reviving that brand of dominance enjoyed for nearly a half century. In many ways, this bat serves as a closing bookend on the Yankee empire. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.5.
