1964 Roberto Clemente Game Used & Signed Bat, Graded PSA GU 9.5. A lengthy typed and signed letter of provenance from this bat's original recipient recounts a charming story about a friendship between a Pittsburgh native who got a dream job as a cameraman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the greatest star of his hometown team. Though the letter is far too long to reproduce in its entirety, it tells of the fulfillment of a promise near the conclusion: "In the middle of the 7th inning, one of the Pirate clubhouse boys approached me from the field, and motioned for me to come to the rail. He carried a bat, and said it was from Roberto. It was signed on the barrel, "To Joe Jr., Best Wishes, Roberto Clemente." I was shocked and surprised and as he took the field he looked over and smiled at me... I asked him if he had hit any home runs with it, and he said that he had hit one two games in a row with it against the Giants the week before, one against the great Juan Marichal on Saturday."Certainly one of the most desirable and ideally provenanced Clemente bats ever to surface in the collecting hobby, the supplied signature model Hillerich & Bradsby G105 also boasts ideal vintage, dating to a season which saw the Pirates Hall of Famer post National League-topping figures in both hits (211) and average (.339). The bat exhibits magnificent use, perfectly corresponding with Clemente's own story to the recipient that the bat was the same one he had tried to give him two weeks earlier, hence a veteran of at least a dozen games. Ball marks coat the barrel, and spike holes and bat rack streaks are also apparent. The lightly cracked handle still holds a considerable coating of pine tar. Number "21" is handwritten in marker on the knob end. Length and weight of thirty-six inches and ounces respectively are proper for Clemente's ordering records. Finally, the black ink inscription on the barrel, recounted in the included letter of provenance, remains a bold 9/10 in black ballpoint ink. LOA from PSA/DNA, Graded GU 9.5. LOA from Vince Malta.
