    Description

With notarized letter of provenance from Yankees bat boy!

1964 Mickey Mantle Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. It was the last great season of Mickey Mantle's career, one in which he was denied his fourth American League MVP Award only by our good friend Brooks Robinson, whose trophy for the honor commanded $155,350 in our November 2015 auction. Check the Mick's career stats and you'll see that 1964 contains his last bold ink of American League supremacy, all related to the combination of slugging and on-base percentage. Mantle would record thirty-five home runs and twenty-five doubles along with ninety-nine bases on balls during the 1964 season, a testament to the fear he struck into the hearts of opposing pitchers.

The experts at PSA/DNA characterize the apparent game use on this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby D113 as "outstanding," making note of multiple ball marks and stitch impressions, as well as blue bat rack streaks and a light coating of pine tar--a key Mantle trait--at mid-handle. The stained finish has been restored, the sole point deduction in an otherwise perfect rating.

An included 1992 letter of provenance from former Yankees bat boy Anthony Florio reads, in part, "I took it out of the Yankee bat rack and kept it as a souvenir of my experiences with the N.Y. Yankees. This was in either 1963 or 1964." The PSA/DNA letter explains how they were able to narrow the production date of the offered relic to the American League Championship season of 1964, as Mantle only once ordered this model at a thirty-four inch (34") length, on April 3rd of that year. The thirty-two ounce (32 oz.) weight perfectly matches those records.

Heritage has auctioned six Mantle bats for figures in excess of $100,000 in recent years, most notably a 1956 All-Star bat that commanded an eye-popping $430,200 in February 2014. This is a market on a sharp rise by all indications, and we expect this offering to be a primary target within the investment-minded collecting demographic. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.
